What the Commission is doing
The European Commission is preparing a new Strategy for European Life Sciences, to be adopted in 2025. This was announced in both the Political Guidelines 2024-29 and the Competitiveness Compass.
This strategy will address different sectors, aiming to strengthen life sciences research and innovation in Europe - an area that studies all life on our planet, from microorganisms, plants, animals and humans to whole ecosystems. The aim is to boost innovation that can help with Europe’s green and digital transitions, while making sure technologies are safe and widely used.

Choose Europe for life sciences: A strategy to position the EU as the world’s most attractive place for life sciences by 2030
Why the strategy is needed
Life sciences can make Europe more competitive and help drive progress in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, energy, food and biotechnology.
For decades, the EU has been a leader in this field thanks to its strong knowledge base and know-how. But we are now losing ground to other global players when it comes to investment in research and innovation and turning it into real-world solutions. This is due to a number of challenges and barriers such as complex regulations, scattered funding and difficulties bringing new products and services to the market.
